Tattoo Aftercare Guide

Proper tattoo aftercare is one of the most important parts of achieving a well-healed tattoo. Looking after your tattoo correctly during the healing process helps protect detail, reduce irritation and ensure the tattoo settles as cleanly as possible. At Bird In A Suit Tattoo Studio in Ingleby Barwick, we provide aftercare guidance for every client to help support healthy healing and long-lasting tattoo quality. Healing times vary depending on placement, skin type and the size of the tattoo, but following proper aftercare instructions can make a huge difference to the final result. We have provided some advice and guidance in our tattoo aftercare guide below which can be used as a reference, but after each tattoo session at Bird In A Suit Tattoo we provide our clients with a full care guide after each session.

Tattoo Aftercare During The First 24 Hours

Your tattoo will usually be covered after your appointment to help protect the area during the first stage of healing.

Once advised, gently remove the covering and wash the tattoo carefully using:

  • Lukewarm water
  • Mild fragrance-free soap
  • Clean hands only

Pat the area dry gently with clean paper towel or allow it to air dry naturally.

Avoid:

  • Scratching
  • Tight clothing
  • Excessive touching
  • Re-bandaging unless instructed

How To Wash & Moisturise A Healing Tattoo

During healing:

  • Wash the tattoo gently 1–2 times daily
  • Keep the area clean
  • Apply a thin layer of recommended aftercare cream if needed

Avoid over-moisturising, as the tattoo still needs to breathe during healing.

Healing tattoos may:

  • Flake
  • Peel
  • Feel itchy
  • Appear slightly dull temporarily

This is a normal part of the healing process.

What To Avoid While Your Tattoo Heals

During healing it is important to avoid:

  • Swimming pools
  • Hot tubs
  • Saunas
  • Sunbeds
  • Direct sun exposure
  • Picking or scratching
  • Heavy friction on the area

Excess moisture and irritation can negatively affect healing and tattoo quality.

How Long Does A Tattoo Take To Heal?

Most tattoos heal on the surface within 2–3 weeks, though deeper layers of skin can continue healing for longer.

Larger tattoos, colour tattoos and heavily detailed pieces may take additional time to fully settle.

Proper aftercare and avoiding irritation during healing help achieve the best healed result.

Aftercare For Black & Grey & Colour Tattoos

Both black and grey tattoos and colour tattoos benefit from consistent aftercare during healing.

Colour tattoos may sometimes appear slightly more vibrant or irritated during the early stages of healing, while black and grey tattoos may soften slightly as the skin settles.

Keeping the tattoo clean, protected and moisturised appropriately helps preserve contrast and detail.

When To Seek Advice

Mild redness, tenderness and peeling are normal during healing.

However, if you experience:

  • Excessive swelling
  • Severe pain
  • Unusual discharge
  • Persistent irritation

you should seek professional medical advice.

If you have questions about your tattoo healing, Bird In A Suit Tattoo Studio is always happy to help advise clients during the aftercare process
